Frequently asked questions

Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions. If you have any additional questions or comments, feel free to call us at (786) 760-0279 or email us at andy@galenne.com — we're happy to help!

1. How it works

How does Galenne work?

Pick a boat and reserve a 1/4 share. We find the other three owners, set up the LLC and buy the boat. Then we run everything for you: bookings, maintenance and paperwork.

Who owns the boat?

Each boat is owned by its own LLC. Your share is 25% of that LLC. Galenne owns no part of it.

How is this different from owning alone or a club?

Owning alone, you pay for the whole boat. Here you pay for a quarter, and we handle everything. In a club, you share a fleet with many members. Here you own one boat with three others.

How many owners share each boat?

Four, each with a 1/4 share.

What if a co-owner doesn't pay?

They lose access to the boat. If they still don't pay, their share is sold, and the other owners get the first option to buy it.

Who makes the decisions?

We handle the day to day. Big decisions go to an owner vote. Once a year, the owners meet online to approve the budget.

Who looks after the boat?

Galenne runs the LLC: accounts, taxes, insurance and the booking app. In each city, a local yacht-management partner operates our program and looks after the boat: maintenance, cleaning and captains. We don't mark up their costs.

Can the owners replace Galenne?

Yes, at any time, by owner vote.

2. Buying a share

How do I buy a share?

Choose a boat and reserve your share with a refundable deposit. Once all four shares are taken, there's a sea trial and closing. At closing you pay for your share plus a one-time 10% acquisition fee. You'll see every number before you commit.

Can I finance my share?

Yes, through a lender of your choice. We don't lend, but our Financing page shows your options.

What do I get as an owner?

Your share certificate, the insurance documents, keys, app access, and a walkthrough of the boat on your first day. If you want to drive yourself, the Owner-Operator Program trains you, and Galenne covers 50% of your first two sessions.

What does it cost each month?

A quarter of the boat's yearly running costs: dockage, insurance, servicing, cleaning and our admin fee. Fuel is billed as you use it, plus $6.75 per engine hour for scheduled engine service. At closing you also put down deposits that come back when you sell.

Can I buy more than one share?

Yes. Two shares give you half the boat and twice the time.

Can I own shares in more than one boat?

Yes, in as many boats as you like.

Do I need boating experience?

No. The captains who manage our program train you in the Owner-Operator Program, from a 30-minute check to several days of sessions, and sign you off before you go out alone. Galenne covers 50% of your first two sessions. You can always book a captain instead: 6-hour minimum, fully turnkey.

Can I buy a share with a friend or partner?

Yes. Two people can share one 1/4 share. You split the bookings and are both responsible for the monthly payments.

3. Selling

Can I sell my share at any time?

Yes. We suggest a price and you decide. We can also help you find a buyer.

What happens at the end?

The co-ownership runs for four years, longer if all owners agree. You can sell your share at any time. At the end of the term, the boat is sold and the money is split.

What if my share doesn't sell?

We market it and run sea trials. If interest is low, we may suggest a lower price.

Are there fees when I sell?

Find your own buyer and you only pay the transfer costs. If we find the buyer, our fee is 10%.

4. Using the boat

How many days do I get?

A quarter of the calendar, booked in our app. Weekdays and weekends are shared equally, and any day nobody has booked is yours too. With four owners, holidays rarely clash; if they do, the most requested dates rotate and each owner has a yearly maximum of holiday dates.

What if the boat breaks down?

We do repairs on weekdays so the boat is ready for the weekend. If a breakdown costs you a booked day, it doesn't count against your share.

Can the boat be rented out?

No. It's never chartered or rented. Only signed-off owners and the captains who manage our program can drive it. Your family can go out with one of those captains, even when you're not aboard.

Is the boat insured?

Yes, fully, including liability. If you or your guests damage the boat, you pay the deductible, usually around 5% of the boat's value.
